It Starts From Within; Be Your Own Motivation, Believe in Yourself, Find Your Fire

While reading one of Robert Kiyosaki‘s articles on the entrepreneurship something he wrote struck a chord with me. He mentioned of how important it is to be your own motivation. And it got me thinking of how most of us not only chase. But we have become completely dependent on motivation, inspiration or even applauding from others to the point our days are gloomy without it. And not to say it’s a bad thing, sometimes we all need that reminder, that gentle nudge to get us back on the right path.

But, what happens if that support isn’t there? Can we do much without it? Do we still realize we are capable? “There is nothing outside of yourself that can ever enable you to get better, stronger, richer, quicker or smarter .Everything is within. Everything exists. Seek nothing outside of yourself” Miyamoto Musashi. We need to be able to start our own fires before anyone can add any wood to it or even fan it. We need to be our own cheerleaders before anyone else can be that for us. It starts within.

I remember some time back when I thought of venturing into a new project. It didn’t just hit me one morning; “this is what I want to do”. I had been toying with the idea for a while. Fear had clouded my vision for so, long. I was scared and all sorts of thoughts crossed my mind every day. I had no previous experience, there was no guarantee that any of my ideas were going to work.

And to this moment some of the ideas are yet to be realized. And as I get into different ventures every other day, there still isn’t a guarantee that any of it will be a success. But as Eleanor Roosevelt says” You gain strength and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face…You must do the thing you think you cannot do”. And that’s where we begin.

Looking back, I’ve had lots of support, inspiration and motivation from family, friends, vlogs, blogs; all of which am so grateful for.  But, there are nights when I’ve woken up and it’s just me, my thoughts and the crickets. And I’ve thought to myself; what am I doing, is it going to work, was this the right decision. And‌ in those sleepless nights I’ve realized I can’t pick up the phone and call the people I’ve called before to say am scared. In those nights I’ve realized there isn’t a perfect article, or vlog right that moment that will speak me out of the doubts.

In those nights, I’ve realized that no one is coming to save me, this life is 100% my responsibility. And in the process, I’ve learnt to speak to myself. I’ve learnt to say to myself positive things that will move me from that place of doubt to believe. There is just so much motivation that you can get from out there. But it won’t matter if there isn’t something in you that believes in all that already. Things we hear, things we read, advice we are given. All those resonate with us because they are things we already know, even if only subconsciously

So, if you have not yet begun your own self-motivation journey take it from me; there are just things that others can’t do for you. One of them is what Jim Rohn says.” You can’t hire someone to do your pushups for you”. We can’t have others be our motivation or believe in us enough to make us believe in ourselves. We live in a world where short cuts or quick fixes are very appealing.

We want to get to where we are going stress free, and it’s all good. If you can delegate, if you can hire and if others are willing to do the work for you; that’s ok. But what happens when there is just you and your fears in the middle of the night. Can you count on you? Do you trust that you’ll get yourself out of that hole of doubt or fear without anyone’s help?

Where are you today.? The year has just begun, what do you want to accomplish? Are you waiting to feel inspired or motivated? It’s not always that we will feel inspired or motivated enough to get us started on our ventures. But does that mean that we sit and wait for motivation to come before we start moving? Sometimes that spark is buried under all that fear, negativity and doubt. And we just need to start walking before we feel anything. Motion creates emotion. When you believe in yourself others will too. Start moving in the direction you wish to go. Let the motivation and inspiration pick up momentum as you go.” Set your life on Fire. Seek those who Fan your Flames” Rumi

Be your own motivation, let others cheer you on when you are already on your way. Let your motivation be the fire, let their motivation be the wind that sometimes fans your fire. Let others be just reminders of things you already know. Let others be the water that can sometimes nourish the seed that’s already planted in you. Be your own strength. Let others carry you when you have walked more than half the mile already. There is so much in us but, we can only see it when we stop looking outside for confirmation and for applauding. Look within; be your own source. Let others be that support along the way, not the only support. You are enough. Fill yourself up. Become a whole being on your own.

“A bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because her trust is not on the branch but on its own wings. Always believe in yourself” Anonymous

  1. This is so true, and so motivating! It can be such a trap but happens so easily, especially once you’ve put something out there, you slowly start depending on external validation/support/approval. This is a great reminder to carry on without needing any of that.

Love this: “Motion creates emotion. When you believe in yourself others will too. Start moving in the direction you wish to go. Let the motivation and inspiration pick up momentum as you go.”

Motion is so important, in every sense — literally, too, to get into a motivated state.

Thanks for another wonderful post, Aggy 🙂

  2. He who can conquer self is a real winner.
